چکیده

We present a method of recovering shape from shading that solves directly for the surface height. By using a discrete formulation of the problem, we are able to achieve good convergence behavior by employing numerical solution techniques more powerful than gradient descent methods derived from variational calculus. Because we directly solve for height, we avoid the problem of nding an integrable surface maximally consistent with surface orientation. Furthermore, since we do not need additional constraints to make the problem well posed, we use a smoothness constraint only to drive the system towards a good solution; the weight of the smoothness term is eventually reduced to near zero. Also, by solving directly for height, we can use stereo processing to provide initial and boundary conditions. Our shape from shading technique, as well as its relation to stereo, is demonstrated on both synthetic and real imagery.

Direct Computation of Shape from Shading

A direct method for the recovery of su$ace shape from image shading is presented. The method in its basic form is applicable to shading pattems obtained when a distant overhead point light-source illuminates a convex or concave Lambertian surface possessing a single extrema1 point at which surface height has either a local maximum or local minimum. A key quality of the method is its ability to ...

Bump Mapping

Blinn [1] introduced bump mapping as a technique that makes a surface appear rough or wrinkled. This affect is achieved by perturbing the normals used in the illumination computation. Hence, it only affects the shading, not the underlying geometry. The bump map can contain height values that will affect the normal of each pixel. However, it can as an alternative contain normals that have been c...

Effects of Light Regimes on the Growth of Cherrybark Oak Seedlings

Light regimes vary significantly within small forest openings, rangingfrom full sunlight to total shade, and they may affect the establishment and early growth of oak seedlings. We designed modified shadehouses to simulate the complex light conditions within forest openings and tested the effects of daily photosynthetically active radiation (PAR), time of direct light exposure, and the ratio of...

Graph-spectral methods for computer vision

This thesis describes a family of graph-spectral methods for computer vision that exploit the properties of the first eigenvector of the adjacency matrix of a weighted graph. The algorithms are applied to segmentation and grouping, shape-from-shading and graphmatching. In Chapter 3, we cast the problem of grouping into an evidence combining setting where the number of clusters is determined by ...

From Deterministic to Stochastic Methods for Shape From Shading

Shape from shading designates the problem of shape rebuilding of a surface, starting from one image only of this surface. We compare different iterative methods of resolution of shape from shading. An analysis of the various discrete formulations of the problem is made, which allows the proposition of a certain number of error functions. Three deterministic methods to minimize these errors are ...
